Masaka

Location of Masaka within Uganda

Masaka is a city in southern Uganda near Lake Victoria and the Nabugabo Lake with approx. 75,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the eponymous district Masaka and lies south of the equator on the highway from Kampala (about 140 miles) to Mbarara and Rwanda. The nearest port on Lake Victoria is situated to the east and about 40 km away Bukakata ( Ferry to Ssese Islands ).

Masaka is since 1953 the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Masaka, but has a religiously mixed population ( Christians, Muslims ).

In 1979, the city during the invasion of Tanzanian troops who were involved in the expulsion of Idi Amin, was badly damaged, which can be seen in some places in the urban landscape today.
