Maschito

Maschito, Albanian Mashqitë, is a municipality in the Vulture area in the province of Potenza, in the Basilicata Italy.

Location

The village rises in the transition zone between the Lucania Apennines and the Apulian coastal plain on the hill Mustafà. The highest point of the urban area is the Monte Caruso ( 800 m). The territory is predominantly agricultural, are grown mainly wine ( Aglianico del Vulture ), olives and wheat. There are also small forest areas. Some streams flow through Maschito.

Borders the following municipalities: Forenza, Ginestra, Palazzo San Gervasio and Venosa.

Population

Maschito has 1707 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012 ).

The population today is Maschitos Italianized largely, only the members of the older generation still speak Albanian. In folklore, however, different customs and rituals of Arbëresh have received.

History

In the area Maschitos was in Roman times a castrum. The existing there since that time the village was completely abandoned after an earthquake in the 14th century by its inhabitants.

Repopulation Maschitos started at 1467 under the Neapolitan King Ferdinand II, as Skanderbeg sent him troops against the Anjou. After the complete conquest of Albania by the Ottomans 1478/79 many Albanians fled to southern Italy and found, among other refuge in Maschito. Another wave of immigration resulted from an agreement between Charles V and Suleiman I in 1533, as a result, were allowed to leave the Ottoman Empire ceded the fortress town of Koroni with one provided by Charles V available ship many Greeks and Albanians and of also in the area Maschito settled. At that time the territory belonged to the Archbishopric Maschitos Venosa and the Priory Santo Sepolcro in Bari. In 1539 it was awarded by the Napoletan Viceroy Don Giovanni de Icis a fief, whose family subsequently ruled Maschito. Approximately two hundred years could get in Maschito the Greek Orthodox rite, to under the bishop Deodato Scaglia the community went over to the Latin rite.

In September 1943 Maschito was the scene of one of the earliest uprisings against the Nazis.
