Masquerades is an Algerian- French comedy film directed by Lyes Salem in the year 2008.

Action

Mounir Mekbel lives with his wife Habiba and their son amines in a small village in Algeria. In his house, his sister Rym, who suffers from narcolepsy and has not yet found man lives. However, she loves for years secretly the best friend Mounir, Khliffa. The is only called and tried to open a video store in the village and so build the financial foundation for a marriage with Rym of all Ringo. Mounir know nothing of the relationship and would not approve of. The gardener who claims before others, he was " horticulturist " desires for his sister, whom he referred to as "Princess ", a worthy husband. One day are invited to the wedding of Nadia, who is friends with Rym Mounir and his family. He returns home in the evening and confesses before the indignant women that the story he had just made up. Both are facilitated and plan the rapid resolution of the story. Habiba asks Mounir several times to dissolve the muddled situation, but he always put off to a more convenient time. Eventually the point is reached at which he has to admit that the situation is to proceed. Khliffa learned of Rym that the husband is just made up, and Nadia is initiated into the lie. Rym plans with Khliffa to disappear from the village, but Khliffa can not get away, because he is the only one of the family - including mother and grandparents - fed. Rym is extremely disappointed by Khliffa. The finally fits Mounir from on a road outside the village. Both speak out and it is clear that it is also because of their friendship that Mounir is against a marriage of Rym and Khliffa. He promises, however, agree to a marriage if Khliffa manages to leave Vancooten disappear. Both are married, while in the village, there is incomprehension about how Rym Khliffa may prefer the rich Vancooten. Habiba has Mounir found outside the village and informed of the plans of his sister. Mounir hurries back to the village, but can Rym and Khliffa no longer living in their cars. Since Khliffa and Rym find that Rym is no longer asleep for half a day, the second condition for a wedding was fulfilled in the end Mounir.

Production

Masquerades was the feature film debut by Lyes Salem, who also co-authored the screenplay and played the leading role of the gardener Mounir. Born in Algiers Salem lived in France since the 1980s; was produced masquerades to 80 percent by French production companies. The film underwent on 25 November 2008 at the Cairo International Film Festival in Egypt its premiere. On 10 December 2008 he arrived in the French cinema and was released on February 8, 2009, in Germany. Arte showed the film for the first time on October 2, 2011 at the German television; he was not synchronized, but subtitled.

Criticism

The filmdienst masquerades called a " lively [n ] film that addresses the issue of hypocrisy in a very humorous way." He remember doing of works by Emir Kusturica, where he was trying " to paint a positive picture of Algerian society and to supply any negative stereotypes. Awards

Masquerades won in 2008 at the Dubai International Film Festival FIPRESCI Award and a Muhr Award for Best Picture. The film was Algeria 's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009, but was not shortlisted. Masquerades was nominated for a César for Best debut of 2009. Mohamed Bouchaïb won the 2009 Prix Lumière one in the category Best Young Actor.
