Masquerades is an Algerian- French comedy film directed by Lyes Salem in the year 2008.
Action
Mounir Mekbel lives with his wife Habiba and their son amines in a small village in Algeria. In his house, his sister Rym, who suffers from narcolepsy and has not yet found man lives. However, she loves for years secretly the best friend Mounir, Khliffa. The is only called and tried to open a video store in the village and so build the financial foundation for a marriage with Rym of all Ringo. Mounir know nothing of the relationship and would not approve of. The gardener who claims before others, he was " horticulturist " desires for his sister, whom he referred to as "Princess ", a worthy husband. One day are invited to the wedding of Nadia, who is friends with Rym Mounir and his family. Rym falls during the wedding again to and falls asleep, which makes for blasphemous estates among the guests. Two women making fun of Rym, but also Mounir be watered from amines with water. Amine Mounir must say the reason for this and reacts angrily in the sequence. He gets drunk and screams at night on the village street, that he had already found for Rym a husband who is even richer than the wealthy Colonel, whose garden Mounir cares.
The next morning, Mounir know nothing more of his nocturnal escapades, but has the news that Rym 'll marry, spread like wildfire. Rym and Habiba are appalled that Mounir wants zwangsverheiraten his sister. While the unknown future groom already mutated in the village gossip about a rich man who resides in a 4 -star hotel is the nearest big city, Mounir has disappeared. He returns home in the evening and confesses before the indignant women that the story he had just made up. Both are facilitated and plan the rapid resolution of the story. You leave the next day to the hotel, keep up a little in the visitor area and drive off again when the hotel one William Vancooten emerges to which crashes the press present. Back in the village they want to tell, that Rym has rejected the application of the worshiper. Rym however, sees their arrival as hiding Khliffa from her family. Since she is angry with him and his cowardice, she tells the tense villagers that she had met her future husband William Vancooten and he is attractive, strong and courageous. Khliffa turn Mounir finally admits that he is secretly for four years with Rym together. Mounir outraged announces him the friendship and good insulation Rym as much as possible from the outside world.
In the next few days Mounir rises within the village community from the small gardener on the respected and sought-after man of the world. At his side be respected neighbor Redouane Lamouchi is now common to see who has not even considered previously greeted him, but now showered him with gifts. Together, they even put in a businessman who wants to buy in the area pastures. The wedding preparations are going to inevitably and Rym receives from the community first gifts. Habiba asks Mounir several times to dissolve the muddled situation, but he always put off to a more convenient time. Eventually the point is reached at which he has to admit that the situation is to proceed. Khliffa learned of Rym that the husband is just made up, and Nadia is initiated into the lie. Rym plans with Khliffa to disappear from the village, but Khliffa can not get away, because he is the only one of the family - including mother and grandparents - fed. Rym is extremely disappointed by Khliffa. The finally fits Mounir from on a road outside the village. Both speak out and it is clear that it is also because of their friendship that Mounir is against a marriage of Rym and Khliffa. He promises, however, agree to a marriage if Khliffa manages to leave Vancooten disappear. Khliffa roars at night in the village that Vancooten will never appear because he rejects the villagers, and Rym belonged to him. The second requirement to Mounir Khliffa makes it clear that Khliffa Rym will never get, Mounir wants but that his sister is sleeping less. The next morning Ryms bed is empty. She spent the night with Khliffa and both continue the next morning before Mounir can find them. Mounir disappears. Rym and Khliffa return later and Rym packs her bags. She wants to Khliffa out of the village. Random knocks a Mufti at her door, from which Rym can spontaneously declare the marriage ritual - a practical example with her in the wedding dress and her supposed cousin Khliffa. Both are married, while in the village, there is incomprehension about how Rym Khliffa may prefer the rich Vancooten. Habiba has Mounir found outside the village and informed of the plans of his sister. Mounir hurries back to the village, but can Rym and Khliffa no longer living in their cars. Since Khliffa and Rym find that Rym is no longer asleep for half a day, the second condition for a wedding was fulfilled in the end Mounir.
Production
Masquerades was the feature film debut by Lyes Salem, who also co-authored the screenplay and played the leading role of the gardener Mounir. Born in Algiers Salem lived in France since the 1980s; was produced masquerades to 80 percent by French production companies. The film underwent on 25 November 2008 at the Cairo International Film Festival in Egypt its premiere. On 10 December 2008 he arrived in the French cinema and was released on February 8, 2009, in Germany. Arte showed the film for the first time on October 2, 2011 at the German television; he was not synchronized, but subtitled.
Criticism
The filmdienst masquerades called a " lively [n ] film that addresses the issue of hypocrisy in a very humorous way." He remember doing of works by Emir Kusturica, where he was trying " to paint a positive picture of Algerian society and to supply any negative stereotypes. " For Cinema masquerades was a " patriarchal satire, which at the same time an absurdly funny love letter to his [ Lyes Salem ] home is. "
Awards
Masquerades won in 2008 at the Dubai International Film Festival FIPRESCI Award and a Muhr Award for Best Picture. The film was Algeria 's official entry for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009, but was not shortlisted. Masquerades was nominated for a César for Best debut of 2009. Mohamed Bouchaïb won the 2009 Prix Lumière one in the category Best Young Actor.
