In Switzerland and Liechtenstein are three types of continuing education diplomas awarded:

  • Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS ) ( certificate level)
  • Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) (graduate level)
  • Master of Advanced Studies (MAS ) or Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA ) (Master level)

In Austria, introduced in 1999, MAS degree in the amendment to the university ( studies ) has been Act 2002 does not explicitly recorded. Master's degrees as an academic university degree as a MAS can be acquired through the successful completion of a university course, a course in continuing education, a university course or a course of university character.

In Germany, the MAS does not count as an academic university degree, but is classified as' postgraduate study offer ( PGS) ". It can be done as per the decision of the Standing Conference of 14 April 2000, stating the lending institution. In contrast to the consecutive Master is the MAS to depth and specialization studies (formerly Postgraduate Studies NDS) with different levels that do not belong to the academic master's degrees of the Bologna process.

Basics to a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS )

The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS ) requires 60 ECTS credits and includes a master's thesis. The MAS degree program can be completed part-time in about 2 years in a minimum of 15 months. This corresponds to a workload of approximately 1800 hours. The prerequisite for admission is often a multi-year work experience and the completion of a higher education institution ( university or college ) or an equivalent qualification (eg diploma from a technical college or higher professional examination plus qualified professional experience with management or departmental responsibility).

Alternatively it can be modular in a MAS - study program training. Frequently encountered model is the implementation by CAS modules, usually with ten ECTS points. A CAS module usually lasts one semester with an effort of 280 hours of " workload". The program - usually 13 weeks each on one day per week and an additional intensive week - allows a part-time study. With three CAS degrees ( 30 ECTS credits ), a DAS- degree ( Diploma of advanced studies ) can be achieved. Five CAS, a master's thesis and a university degree or an equivalent educational background are the requirements for the federally recognized MAS degree with 60 ECTS points.
