Matthew II Izmirlian

Matheos III. Izmirlian (Armenian Մատթեւոս Բ Իզմիրլյան; born February 22, 1845 in Constantine Opel, Ottoman Empire, † December 11, 1910 in Echmiadzin, Russian Empire ), and Matthew II of Constantinople Opel (Armenian Մատթեւոս Բ Կոնստանդնուպոլսեցի Matt'ēos II Kostandnupolsec'i ) was from 1894 to 1896 and 1908, the Armenian Apostolic Patriarch of Constantinople Opel and 1908-1910 Catholicos of the entire Armenian Apostolic Church.

Life

Matheos was born in 1845 in Constantinople Opel as Simeon Martiros Izmirlian (Armenian Սիմեոն Մարտիրոսի Իզմիրլյան ). He was ordained a priest in 1869 and served first as secretary of Patriarch Mkrtitsch Chrimjan. In 1872 he was elected secretary of the Armenian Religious Council of Constantinople Opel, rose in 1873 to dzayrakouyn Vartabed and in 1876 bishop.

From 1886 to 1890 he was the primacy of the Armenians in Egypt. Back in Constantinople Opel Matheos Izmirlian was elected in 1894 to the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople Opel. His insistence on democratic reforms and respect for the rights of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as well as his protest against the massacre of the Armenians 1894-1896 earned him the title "Iron Patriarch " ( Arm. Երկաթյա պատրիարք Yergatya Badryark ).

Because of his activism took off the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II Izmirlian and banished him to Jerusalem; he was replaced by Malachi Ormanian ( 1896-1908 ). After the Young Turk Revolution in 1908, when the Committee of Union and Progress proclaimed constitutional reforms Izmirlian returned to Constantinople Opel and was re-elected on November 1, as Patriarch. After just a few months Izmirlian was elected " Armenian Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All 'on the death of Catholicos Chrimian to why he left the city towards Echmiadzin to be consecrated there.

In 1909 he traveled via Odessa to St. Petersburg, where he met in July with Tsar Nicholas II to campaign for the release of members of the " Comité Arméniens de Russie ". Having returned to Echmiadzin he died in 1910 after only two years in the Catholicate.

Izmirlian published numerous and extensive works, including a 1300 -page book, which was published in 1881 in Constantinople Opel under the title " Հայրապետություն Հայաստանյայց առաքելական Ս. Եկեղեցվո եւ Աղթամար ու Սիս ". It dealt with the history of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Armenia, Aghtamar and Sis. In 1911 his letters (called " Նամականի " Namakani ) published in Cairo.
