Matthias Johann Eisen

Matthias Johann iron ( born September 28, 1857 in Vigala ( German: Fickel ), Läänemaa, Estonia; † August 6, 1934 in Tartu ( Dorpat ), Estonia ) was an Estonian folklorist and anthropologist.

Life

Iron was born the son of the schoolmaster of the village eyelet. From 1871, he attended the third city elementary school for boys in Pärnu ( Pärnu ), where the language of instruction was German and Russian. In 1872 he moved to the county school to Haapsalu ( Haapsalu ) where iron was only taught in German, but Latin, Greek and French learned. From 1875, he attended high school in Pärnu. During this time he wrote smaller treatises on historical issues and made ​​translations from the French and Germans.

1879 Iron theology student at Tartu University, which he completed in 1885. In his student days he was in contact with the two major national associations of Estonians, the Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts ( club students Estonians ) and the Eesti Kirjameeste Selts ( Estonian Literary Society ).

A job as a theologian was very difficult at that time for an Estonian in the German -dominated church in Estonia. Therefore, he turned to the Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg. Iron was ordained on December 21, 1886 as pastor in Lempaala in Ingria. In 1887 he went to Karelia, Petrozavodsk he was vicar. In 1888 he was again pastor in Kattila before then from 1888 to 1912 held a position as pastor at St. Nicholas Church in Brasov. In addition, he was also responsible for the Lutheran members of the Russian Navy in Kronstadt. His church services he held in Estonian, Finnish and Swedish.

1889 married Ella iron Petronius, who belonged to the minority population of Ingrians. Until 1922 he held religious instruction into Estonian, but also in Finnish or German and were language courses for Estonian in elementary and secondary schools.

Folklorist

Iron left his post in Kronstadt for health reasons, he did not get the humid ocean air, and went to Tartu. He had been dealing in the years before his return to Estonia with the folklore of his country and publishes books about the stories of the people. The most important was the four -volume work Eesti rahvanali from 1909, which was launched in 1910 again.

1919 iron was first appointed as a lecturer and in 1921 as a personal professor at the University of Tartu, Estonian folklore to teach there. The University had changed after the independence of the country to a national university. In 1927 he was officially adopted, were, however, still occasionally lectures.
