Matthias Tanner

Mathias Tanner SJ (* February 28, 1630 in Pilsen, Bohemia, † February 8, 1692 in Prague) was a Bohemian Catholic priest, theologian and religious historian. At times, he was rector of the Charles University in Prague.

Life

At sixteen, Tanner joined the Society of Jesus on 23 September 1646. After the orden conventional studies he taught for ten years in philosophy and theology ( dogmatics and exegesis ) in Prague. He was also from 1672 to 1675 rector magnificus of the university. From 1676-1679 and 1686-1689, he was Provincial of the Province of Bohemia, which at that time required a lot of diplomatic skill. In this time negotiations were both with Rome and Vienna with regard to the censorship law of the bishops on the writings of universities in Bohemia; a right that is complaining Tanner for the Jesuit Order. Tanner himself was frequently employed as a censor, as shown by library entries. ;

He also was a director of the monastic house in Prague and the theological education.

As part of the Counter-Reformation Tanner wrote more writings on the Eucharist ( Cruentum Christ sacrificium ). He also initiated the pilgrimage to the " Mount of Olives " in Štramberk ( Kotouč u Štramberka ).

Mathias Tanner died on 8 February 1692 in Prague. His contemporaries described him as a man of ardent piety and attractive.

Importance are Tanners biographical representations of religious history that appeared in splendidly decorated with illustrations volumes. These representative writings are in Latin, Greek, the writings of popular devotion but also partly in German and Czech language.
