Maurice Duruflé

Maurice Duruflé ( born January 11, 1902 in Louviers, Eure, † June 16, 1986 in Paris) was a French organist and composer.

Life

Duruflé was initially studied privately with Louis Vierne and Charles Tournemire, later he studied at the Paris Conservatory with Jean Gallon, composition with Paul Dukas, and Eugène Gigout. From 1929 he was organist at the Parisian church of St. Étienne- du- Mont and toured Europe and North America as a concert organist. In 1943 he became professor of harmony at the Conservatoire. 1953 married Duruflé the organist Marie -Madeleine Chevalier ( 1921-1999 ), a pupil of Marcel Dupré, with whom he often appeared together. Both suffered on May 29, 1975 in a serious car accident which ended the career of organist Duruflé. His last work, the short choral Notre Pere, was born in 1977. Maurice Duruflé died in 1986 at the age of 84 in Paris.

Duruflé wrote mostly sacred vocal and organ music. Although he composed his lifetime, he has released only a fraction of his work for publication. Being influenced by late romanticism, impressionism and Gregorian chant oeuvre includes only 14 provided with opus number works, but distinguish themselves by great skill and high originality. Among the organ works extend the Suite op 5 of 1932 and the 1942 are Prélude et Fugue sur le nom d' Alain, Op 7 shows. Became famous for his Requiem (1947 ) for soloists, chorus, organ and orchestra, which is recognized as a masterpiece of French sacred music.
