Max Deuring

Max Friedrich Deuring ( born December 9, 1907 in Göttingen, † December 20, 1984 ) was a German mathematician who worked primarily with algebra and number theory.

Life and work

Deuring went in his hometown of Göttingen to school and studied mathematics and physics 1926-1930 (apart from the winter semester 1928/1929 in Rome with Francesco Severi ), giving priority to the group of Emmy Noether joined, in which he Arithmetic 1930 theory doctorate algebraic functions. As the title says here an algebraic structure is aimed parallel to the class field theory in algebraic number fields, which also includes the theory of function fields over the rationals and over finite fields. A program that Deuring employed until the 1940s. In the 1930s he also worked on the theory of algebras and summed up the rapid development of this area in the hand, especially the groups of Emmy Noether and Helmut Hasse in a " summary report " Springer-Verlag together ( algebras 1935), the one to standard work was.

He also dealt with analytic number theory, eg with the Gaussian class number problem. After a assistantship at van der Waerden in Leipzig ( also in the group of Emmy Noether and a friend Deurings ) he habilitated in 1935 in Göttingen, but was only in 1938 a professorship in Jena and in 1943 a professorship in Poznan ( his liberal views were the Nazis a thorn in the eye). He employed the 1940s with the construction of the algebraic theory of elliptic and higher function body ( correspondence, etc.), with the goal of the proof of the Riemann Hypothesis for this ( the special case of elliptical function body Helmut Hasse had already done in the 1930s ). Here, however, the same in competition with him working because André Weil came to him before. With its algebraic theory of elliptic function body he could re- establish the theory of complex multiplication (summarized in his report in the new edition of the Encyclopaedia of Mathematical Sciences ). Here, too, went on soon and Goro Shimura and Taniyama Because, by looking at the same abelian varieties.

In the 1950s he worked, inter alia, to with the zeta function of elliptic function fields with complex multiplication ( in connection to Weil and others). After the war Deuring went over professorships in Marburg in 1947 and Hamburg in 1948 as a successor of Gustav Herglotz in 1950 to Göttingen, where he remained until his retirement in 1976, by longer stays at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay apart.

In a paper from the year 1968 " rescues " he proof of Kurt Heegner about the number of imaginary quadratic number fields with class number 1, which was at that time opposed to the later evidence of Harold Stark not recognized by the mathematical public.

Deuring was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen, the Academy of Sciences and Literature (Mainz) and the Leopoldina (Halle / Saale). In 1958 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Edinburgh ( Recent results on algebraic function fields ).
