Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology

The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is a research institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (MPG) in Halle ( Saale). The institute was established in 1999.

Tasks of the Institute / Publications

The Institute examines what criteria people are divided into groups such as ethnic groups and nations, according to what criteria they divided their social environment and the problems resulting from the simultaneous application of different criteria, eg Religion and nation arise.

This research questions corresponding to the division into two departments:

  • " Integration and Conflict " with a regional focus on the countries of Africa, Central Asia and transnational migrants
  • " Socialist and Postsocialist Eurasia " with the thematic priorities ' possession and property ' and 'Religion and Civil Society ' in the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The institute is among other things out a number with " Working Papers ".

Infrastructure

The Institute is supported by the directors Günther Schlee ( Managing Director) and Chris Hann passed.

The end of 2006 a total of 129 employees at the institute, including 28 scientists and 49 junior researchers; in addition there were 8 year externally funded and 16 guest researchers.
