Max Salazar

Max Salazar ( born April 17, 1932 in New York City; † September 19, 2010 ) was an American journalist, author, and musicologist who primarily dealt with Latin Music.

Work

The musicologist Salazar specialized in the study of the history of Latin music; He is the author of Mambo Kingdom: Latin Music in New York and a variety of articles on musicians such as Tito Puente and 200 other articles on dance, which he published in magazines such as the Village Voice, Latin Times, Billboard. Salazar was also co-editor of Latin Beat Magazine and staff of the magazine Impacto. In addition, he has taught at UCLA, the Smithsonian Institution and various colleges.

His interest in Latin American music has developed originally from a Puerto Rican family Salazar in early youth, to this area until the late 1960s turned but too professional when he as a journalist for the magazine Latin New York was active from 1968. In the following years he expanded his research, interviewed numerous musicians, promoters and shapes of the music business, which appeared in various magazines. He also invited eminent musicians of the genre for talks in his weekly radio show, which was transferred from the New York station WKCR; later he moved to the station WBAI. He was a personal friend of artists such as Machito and Tito Puente, in the later years he accompanied the development of the Latin scene and documented their evolution and experimentation with other styles of music.
