Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Mary’s Campus
The Saint Mary's Hospital is the largest hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. It was established in 1889 and belongs to the renowned Mayo Clinic.
History
Foundation
After a tornado of strength F5 via Rochester, in which 37 people were killed, Mother Alfred Moes of the Franciscan Order of Saint Francis decided to build a new hospital. This should be done in collaboration with William Worrall Mayo. The British doctors had come in the 1860s during the American Civil War to Rochester and worked there as a mayor and doctor in a practice, which he led with his sons William James and Charles Horace.
1887 mother bought Alfred for the price of 2,200 U.S. dollars a plot of land to the west of the city, on which the hospital was built.
With a capacity of 27 beds, opened on September 30, 1889 the newly built Saint Marys Hospital. Under the leadership of the now 70 years old father "Will" and "Charlie" collected as attending physicians work experience, while the Sisters of Saint Francis were responsible for the care and treatment of patients. Until 1905, both were the only ones that operations conducted at the " Mayo Clinic ". Through innovative treatments to the clinic quickly gained fame and treated a variety of patients. 1901 came Henry Stanley Plummer as physician at the Saint Marys Hospital. The existing premises quickly became too small and necessitated expansion of the " Mayo Clinic ".
With the establishment of the Mayo Properties Association (now the Mayo Foundation) 1919 Saint Marys Hospital part of the nonprofit organization was.
Construction and development
In addition to the Saint Marys Hospital, Mayo Clinic organization both nationally over several hospitals, research and teaching institutions. The hospital itself was enlarged several times by extensions and new buildings in the 20th century and consists of six buildings, which were named after Sisters of the Order or the Order of Francis himself. Mayo Eugenio Litta Since 1997, the Children's Hospital is also one of the hospital complex.
The Saint Marys Hospital is considered as part of Mayo Clinic among the best hospitals in the United States. Overall, the hospital has 1,157 beds. In 58 operating theaters, 26,500 surgeries are performed annually.
