Mayors for Peace

Mayors for Peace (English: Mayors for Peace ) is an international organization of cities who work for peace, in particular nuclear disarmament prescribed. The organization was founded in 1982 on the initiative of the then mayor of Hiroshima, Takeshi Araki.

From the fundamental consideration out that Mayor for the safety and the lives of their citizens are responsible, try the Mayors for Peace impact on the global spread of nuclear weapons and to take to prevent this. The global association was formerly called " program to promote the solidarity of the cities with the goal of complete elimination of nuclear weapons ( Partnership Program of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to outlaw all nuclear weapons in East and West) ."

Since Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba Association in the " Mayors for Peace " and renamed 2003, the campaign has launched " Vision 2020 " to life, the number of members has more than tripled. Starting from Japan Total 5,551 member cities in 156 countries have joined the organization (as of March 1, 2013 ) since the founding. Participation means to support the opening of negotiations for the abolition of nuclear weapons by the year 2020. On 18 October 2007 Tadatoshi Akiba and " Mayors for Peace " received the award for " Nuclear-Free Future Award " in the category "solutions".

2020 Vision

The Mayors for Peace calls on its member cities to support the 2020 Vision Campaign to so interfere in the international negotiations on nuclear weapons. They are supported by peace groups around the world on both a local and international level. The goal is to enforce a binding agreement of a timetable for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the decision of a Nuclear Weapons Convention, in order to achieve a nuclear-free world by 2020.
