Mayra Andrade

Mayra Andrade (born 13 February 1985 in Havana, Cuba ) is a Cape Verdean singer.

Life

Born of Cape Verdean parents in Cuba, she moved to Cape Verde, then to Senegal, Angola, Germany and finally to Paris, France. On their debut album Navega, who won the Prize of the German Record Critics' Award in 2007, she sings primarily in kapverdischem Creole. In her music she transforms between Latin and jazz, while it combines Brazilian influences ( Tunuka ) with Flamenco ( Lapidu na bo) and begins with songs like Dispidida Navega and at the same time the characteristic melancholy of traditional Cape Verdean music, which is often compared with the Portuguese Fado. In addition to Cesaria Evora, Mayra Andrade Lura Sara Tavares and is now one of the most famous singers of the small group of islands and former colony of Portugal. Already at the age of 16 she won the 2001 gold medal as the best singer in the Jeux de la Francophonie, an international competition in Canada. In 2005 she took with Charles Aznavour on a duet.

Mayra Andrade were granted in 2008 for her album Navega the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music in the newcomer division and by the Cuban music industry the Cubadisco International Award.

In 2010 she was in the short film The sound of the sea by director Ana R. Fernandes her debut as an actress.
