Mazas Prison

The prison of Mazas ( fr. de Mazas Prison ) was a prison opened in 1850 in Paris, near the local railway station, the Gare de Lyon. 1199 cells were grown on an area of ​​approximately 130 ha in 6 buildings housed, each 3.85 times 1.85 m tall. On May 19, 1850 841 prisoners were transferred there from prison Prison de la Force.

In 1863 there was jailed Georges Clemenceau for political reasons. Many of the political prisoners there were during the Paris Commune, the prison was stormed unsuccessful on January 22, 1871. Later, other insurgents of the Paris Commune were detained in the prison of Mazas, including Arthur Rimbaud and Henri Rochefort.

In 1900 the prison was destroyed.
