Mbeere District

The Mbeere District is a district in the province of Eastern in Kenya. The capital is Siakago. In District 1999 170.953 people lived at 2093 km ². The district is divided into four divisions Gachoka, Mwea, Evuvori and Siakago. In Mbeere District lived in 1997, 56 % of the population below the poverty line.

Economy

The people in the District live mainly from agriculture and livestock. Crops are tobacco and cotton, among others. The Tana River flows through the district and is dammed by several dams. Several hydropower plants produce electricity there.

Health service

In 2005, the Mbeere District had a total of 32 health care facilities, including two hospitals. The most common diseases in the district are malaria, respiratory infections and worm infestations. The HIV prevalence rate in 2005 was 12.5%. The infant mortality rate was 7.1 %, while 11.9% of children died before their 5th birthday.
