Mbuji-Mayi

Province

Mbuji -Mayi ( until 1966 Bakwanga ) is a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the capital of the province of East Kasai and has 874 974 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2005).

Geography

The city is located in the southern central riverside Bushimaie.

History

The city was founded in the 1910s as Bakwanga by the Belgian colonizers than diamonds conveyor station.

After the independence of the Congo in June 1960 Bakwanga was until December 1961 the capital of the breakaway province of South Kasai. In the following years the city grew rapidly through immigration of Luba. In 1966, the city was renamed as part of the set to the factory by the dictator Mobutu Sese Seko " Africanization " in " Mbuji -Mayi ".

The recent history of exploitation of the wealth of this city and the misery of the inhabitants. The people hardly benefit from diamond mining by the Societé de minière Bakwanga ( MIBA ). Since 1993 there are supply problems in the region of Shaba refugees.

Economy

The region around the city is considered as the world's major diamond eligible area.
