History

The area was planned and already filed on 28 July 1898 as an independent municipality, however, never came to an establishment. The name McDermott comes from one of the first companies in this area, the McDermott Stone Company.

In McDermott is the Northwest High School ( NHS ), the only public high school of the Northwest Local School District. The school colors of this high school are red and blue, the nickname of its athletic teams is Mohawks.

A prominent graduate of Northwest High School is Ted Strickland ( born 1941 in Lucasville ), which since 2006 has been governor of Ohio.
