The McMurdo Ice Shelf is the part of the Ross Ice Shelf, which is bounded on the south by the McMurdo Sound and the Ross Island in the north and Minna Bluff. Studies show that the ice shelf board relatively easily be distinguished from the Ross Ice Shelf and deserves an individual designation. AJ Heine, who undertook 1962/63 research, suggested the name in front of the panel between the Ross Island, Brown Peninsula, Iceland Black and White Iceland. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names extended as a result the scope of the name in the south.
