Curaglia

Medel ( Lucmagn ) ( [ mɛ dəl ː ]? / I, and German until 1943 officially Medels im Oberland) is a municipality in the district of Disentis in the District Surselva the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Geography

The municipality covers all towns in the Val Medel, the valley between Disentis / Muster and the Lukmanierpass. Their southern boundary is also the boundary between Canton Graubünden and Ticino. Medel ( Lucmagn ) therefore includes numerous villages, hamlets and isolated settlements. Former center was Platta ( 1'389 m asl. ) - The small avalanche prone settlement is still referred to as the capital. Largest village is now Curaglia. Other major settlements of the vast community are (from north to south) Soliwa ( 1'492 m), Mutschnengia ( 1,405 m), Fadretsch ( 1'278 m), Baselgia ( 1,365 m), Drual ( 1'412 m ), Matergia ( 1,415 m), Pardé ( 1,400 m), Fuorns ( 1,488 m), Acla ( 1,477 m) and Sogn Gion ( 1,623 m).

Of the total municipal area of ​​136 km ², over 90 km ² unproductive area, mostly mountains. The highest points are covered by the Medelsergletscher Piz Medel ( 3,210 m) and the Scopi ( 3'190 m). The lake Lai da Sontga Maria is 177 ha large on Lukmanierpass. Further 2026 hectares are covered by forest and woodland. The agricultural area of 2421 ha consists of 2072 ha of mountain pastures and 349 acres of arable and meadow land. The remaining 80 ha municipality accounted for settlement areas.

Because of the gold showings in the various projects were launched again and again. Since at least 1985 gold panning part in Medelser Rhine to the leisure entertainment of Disentis Hotel Acla da Fontauna. The Swiss gold exploration AG plans a commercial mining. On 1 April 2012, the voters of the community refused clearly from a transfer of powers in terms of prospecting license to the parish council. Population

From the end of 2004 480 inhabitants were 476 Swiss nationals. The large majority of the population speaks Sursilvan and is Catholic. Some of the hamlets ( Mutschnengia, Soliwa ) were probably in the 14-15. Century inhabited by German-speaking Walser.

Curaglia has around 300 inhabitants. In Drual live ten and in Matergia four people. In Pardé about 40 people and in Fuorns about 50 people live. Acla - formerly the last settlement in the valley - is no longer permanently inhabited since an avalanche on April 6, 1975.
