Media Control Interface

The Media Control Interface (MCI ) was the first generic interface in Microsoft Windows to control abstract multimedia devices and resources. It was developed early 90s and found its way into Windows 3.11. MCI offers identical functions within a device class and data types, and partly over it. So multimedia devices in a device class can be used largely independent of their very specific properties, therefore we speak of abstract devices.
