Medny Island

Medny (Russian остров Медный / ostrow Medny; Medny Island, translated Copper Island) is on the Bering Island, the second largest of the Commander Islands.

Geography

The 186 km ² island is 59 km long and 5-7 km wide, narrow in the southeast part. The highest point gora Gawanskaja ( гора Гаванская, in German as " port Mountain" ) is located in the northwestern part of the island and has a height of 640 m. At the northwestern end of the island the rocks are beaver ( Бобровые камни / Bobrowyje kamni ), which are connected by an isthmus of about 1 km in length with the island.

The former capital of Preobraschenskoje ( Преображенское ) is left.

The average temperature throughout the year approximately 2.8 ° C.

History

The island was of Vitus Bering in 1741 at the Second Kamchatka, also Great Northern Expedition, discovered. On the uninhabited island settlement Preobraschenskoje was founded in late 19th century by the Aleutian Islands, which were originally native to the island of Attu.

1970 all residents Mednys were relocated to the adjacent Bering Island. Today again uninhabited island serves as an object of study for the exploration of the Arctic flora and fauna.

On the island, among others, sea otters, walruses and polar foxes are native.
