Megen

Megen is a town in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It belongs to the municipality of Oss. Although the Dutchman mainly Protestant faith are, Megen is a Catholic city.

History

The region along the Meuse River was inhabited since 2000 BC by the Gauls. The name probably comes from the Gallic Megen word magos ( level, market), which was Latinized to magus. Megen or Meginus was first mentioned in 721, but received only 1357, this city and Customs Law of Willem Dicbier. Shortly thereafter, a fortress was built, of which even the prison tower remains today.

In 1645 the Franciscan Order established a monastery and a Latin school. The Poor Clares followed in 1721 with the construction of the monastery Sint -Joseph Berg, after they had been five years earlier expelled from Boxtel.

1875 a mill was built.
