Mehmet is a modification of Muhammed ( after the Prophet Muhammad ) in the Turkish and originally means " the praised one " or " the Promised ". This form of the name was already known by the Ottoman Empire in Europe.
At the end of the word a "t" is due to the Turkish devoicing. More rarely, the name comes with a style similar to the Arab "d" before the end. The short form is " Mem".
