Meibutsu

As Meisan (Japanese名产, literally " well-known product " ) or meibutsu (名 物, " well-known thing " ) are traditional handicrafts and food products referred to in Japan, which are a seasonal specialty. Every region in Japan has its own Meisan that in the shops for souvenirs ( Omiyage ) are sold.

With regard to food Meisan are mainly Senbei (rice crackers), sweets with Anko ( bean paste ), pickled radish and other vegetables ( tsukemono ) and fish products in many local variants.

When crafts are found among other wood carvings, lacquer, fabrics, ceramics and subjects. The quality of Meisan article extends over the entire range of cheap kitsch to valuable works of art, particularly of the prestigious artisans, the so-called " living national treasures " were made.

The Meisan industry makes an important contribution to promote the economically depressed rural areas and not let traditional crafts extinct. It is also a means of personal identification with the origin ( Furusato ).
