Meinrad Schütter

Meinrad Schütter ( born September 21, 1910 in Chur, † 12 January 2006 in Küsnacht ) was a Swiss composer.

Life

Meinrad Schütter was coined by the German, Romansh and Italian culture of his native canton of Graubünden. He came from a music-loving parents. The mother sang and had a sizable repertoire of songs, including already Othmar Schoeck was one whose music first big musical impression of the child was. Influential sound experiences at a young age were especially the expressive music of Arthur Honegger and Stravinsky.

In addition to piano and organ lessons Schütter already received as a student theory hours at Antoine Cherbuliez. After studying music at the Conservatory of Zurich followed by trips at home and abroad as a concert companion, a small Romstipendium in 1939 and advanced study during the war as distance learning at Willy Burkhard and 1950-1954 with Paul Hindemith at the University of Zurich. A lot of years of service at the Zurich Opera House as ballet and lighting conductor was day job in addition to the compositional work. From 1976 to the composer lived freelancer in Küsnacht near Zurich.

Meinrad Schütter was largely self-taught. His music is characterized by transparency and concentrated density; Concern is the tone, the cease of a chord. Still under the influence of Expressionism and New Objectivity of the 1930s Schütter early developed the personal style of a fragmentary way of composing a self-contained short sequences with the inclusion of quotation and collage. Concise rhythm, expressiveness, a dance Impetus and the inclination of the composer's humor and irony lead to special waywardness of the musical language. Schütter tonal works, while repeatedly referring to rows of different origins and application form.

The oeuvre includes an extensive instrumental and vocal works: choirs, two fairs, the opera Medea, ballets, orchestral works ( including a symphony ), instrumentally accompanied songs, 60 piano songs, piano and chamber music, as well as a piano concerto. In the song compositions, a broad stylistic development can be seen. They are in the tradition of Hindemith and Schoeck, but also the New Viennese School. His vocal church music field, the span of Gregorian liturgical melody extends to free tonal polyphony.

In his early years as an extreme Modern states ( A. Cherbuliez, 1938), Meinrad Schütter not went the way of the revolutionary, but underwent a development in slow processes. In his late work, the composer reached a new lightness and intensity of color, expression and movement.
