Meir Argov

Meir Argov (birth name: Meyer Grabovsky; Hebrew מאיר ארגוב; * 1905 in Rybnitsa, Russian Empire (now Rîbniţa, Moldova), † November 24, 1963 ) was an Israeli politician, elected in 1949 as Member of Parliament in the first Knesset and this has been a member until his death. He was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence of Israel on 14 May 1948.

Life

After attending a Jewish primary school and a secondary school Argov studied at the University of Kiev. Even while attending school he was in 1917 a member of the Central Committee of the Young Zionists and was among the leaders of the Zionist Organization Hechaluz in today's Ukraine. Because of these activities, he was arrested in 1922 during the reign of the Communist Party and deported to other actions for Zionist organizations in 1924 from the Soviet Union.

After his immigration ( aliyah ) in the Völkerbundsmandatsgegebiet for Palestine in 1927, he worked in agriculture, and was from 1929 to 1939 secretary of the Workers' Council of Petah Tikva. In 1930 he became a member of the organization Vaad Ha'Leumi and 1931 Member of the town of Petah Tikva. In 1940 he joined as a volunteer in the British Army and fought in the Jewish Brigade in Italy. After the Second World War, he took part in operations to save Jewish refugees to Palestine.

Argov, who was among the signers of the Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel on May 14 in 1948, was both a member of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party ( Mapai ) and the Provisional Council of State.

After the establishment of Israel Argov was born on February 14, 1949 the first member of the Knesset and was one of these as a representative of the Mapai until his death on 24 November 1963. During his membership of Parliament he was from February 1949 until his death also Chairman of the Knesset Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence and a member of several other committees.

1971 posthumously published a collection of his essays and articles under the title Struggles: A Collection of Articles and Essays.
