Meir Shapiro

Meir Shapira (also Meir Shapiro; Hebrew יהודה מאיר שפירא; born March 3, 1887 in Suceava, Romania, † October 27, 1933 in Łódź ) was a Hasidic rabbi and Rosh Yeshiva, also known as the Lublin Rabbi. He is known for the publication of the Daf - haJomi study program in 1923, and for founding the Chachmei - Lublin Yeshiva in 1930. Shapiro introduced the idea of Daf haJomi (Hebrew דף יומי, " Daily Journal ") with a daily investigation of the Babylonian Talmud. Rabbi Shapiro presented his idea at the first World Congress of the World Agudath Israel in Vienna on 16 August 1923. The first cycle of the Daf Yomi began on the first day of Rosh Hashanah 5684 (September 11, 1923).
