Mejit Island

Mejit ( German outdated: New Year's Island ) is an atoll in the upscale Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands. The former atoll has a land area of 1.86 km ², the lagoon has dried up. The next ( real ) Atoll, Ailuk, 85 km in western direction

The entire population lives in the capital of the same name and only place Mejit on the southwest side. The residents of the island grow breadfruit and taro. Furthermore, they weave mats well-known from the reed-like leaves of the tree screws. Special features of the island are a unique for the region freshwater lake with ducks in the northern part of the island and the power of the people by a solar system.

The island has a 900 -meter-long airstrip for small aircraft ( IATA code: MJB ), which is almost exclusively served by Air Marshall Islands.

The population increased between 1988 and 1999 by 445 ( high ) from 416.
