Melbbach

Melbbach under the Melbbrücke

The Melbbach, also Engelbach or Poppelsdorfer Bach is a stream in Bonn. Its total length is 6.1 km, its catchment area covers 5.02 square kilometers.

Etymology

The name " Melb " is interpreted as Celtic origin and is loamy mean the name Engelbach derives from a former convent.

Course

The source of the stream is in the range of Waldau. First, the creek runs for 3.1 km through the open natural Melbtal. Here it is crossed by the Melbbrücke. Is now the Melbbad at the site of a former mill. In Poppelsdorf the creek then runs underground (1.5 km ) until it empties into the pond of the Botanical Garden Bonn on Poppelsdorf Castle.

From the pond flowing parts of the water underground to the Rhine further, this 1991 a new, larger canal was built to prevent flooding in Poppelsdorf 1970.
