Melbourne Victory FC W-League

The Melbourne Victory Women are an Australian professional women's football team from Melbourne, Victoria and playing in the top women's soccer league in the country, the W-League. The team was founded in 2008 and is part of the Melbourne Victory FC, the professional men's team plays in the A-League.

History

2008 - founding and first season

In 2008, the Australian football federation ( FFA) founded the Women's Soccer League W-League. In the same year the Melbourne Victory FC set up his women's team. Coach of the new team was Matt Shepard. In addition, the club engaged the Australian national goalkeeper Melissa Barbieri. At the end of the first season, the new league, the team reached the fifth place in the table and thus almost missed a place in the W - League play- offs.

2009 - Second Season

The second season was almost similar as the preseason for the Melbourne Victory Women. In the last game of the season a draw against Perth Glory would have been enough to feed into the play- offs of the W-League. With two goals in the 81st and 87th minute but the team missed the fourth place due to goal difference compared to the same number of points Canberra United FC.

2010/11 - Third Season

Before the start of the 2010/11 season as coach moved to Vicki Linton. With the new coach and new players, the team succeeded in fourth as the first-time entry into the play-offs. In the subsequent semi-final against Sydney FC, ​​the team was defeated 5-1.

2011/12 - Fourth Season

2012/13 - Fifth Season

In 2012, coach Vicki Linton left the team and the Englishman Mike Mulvey became the new coach. Mulvey left the team after ten games to take over the men's team the Brisbane Roar. The Australian Fabrizio Soncin was hired as interim coach and led the team successfully, as third in the table, in the play-offs. After a 1-1 aet against the Perth Glory Women, the team won in a penalty shootout with 3:4 the semi-finals and moved into the Grand Final. 2013/14 - Sixth Season

After the end of the previous year's season the Englishman Dave Edmondson took over as coach. Edmondson led the team at the end of the season, on the third place and the play- offs. In the semifinals, the team won 2:3 against Sydney FC Women and moved into the Grand Final. The final of the domestic Lakeside Stadium, won the Melbourne Victory FC 2-0 against the Brisbane Roar Women and was the first time W-League champion.
