Melchiorre Gioia

Melchiorre Gioja ( born September 20, 1767 in Piacenza, † January 2, 1829 in Milan ) was an Italian philosopher and economist.

Life

Gioja held under the French rule since 1799, the post of Director of the Statistical Bureau in Milan, but was removed in 1820 because of his political opposition to this position. He died in 1829.

Work

In addition to a greater number of philosophical writings, of which the Ideologia ( Mail. 1822, 2 vols ) highlight, he wrote: Filosofia Statistica (ibid., 1822, 4Bde. ), Then in particular Nuovo delle prospetto scienze Economiche (ibid. 1815-19, 6 vols ). In them he has made ​​clear the importance of statistics in history and economics and is therefore also known as a founder of moral statistics.
