Melodic Death Metal

Melodic Death Metal is a subgenre of Death Metal. The term New Wave of Swedish Death Metal (in reference to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal ) also appears frequently and is synonymous with the genre. Similarly, the name Gothenburg Gothenburg Metal or school is not unusual, since the style is originated from the Gothenburg Underground.

History

The first successful band in that genre was At The Gates, with their 1995 released album Slaughter of the Soul, which, like the now famous bands of style Dark Tranquillity and In Flames in Gothenburg came. The band however disbanded in 1996 and in the course of later held popularization of Melodic Death Metal Status of the founders of the genre was often the other two bands, particularly In Flames, as they were able to achieve the greatest commercial success of the trio, awarded. The well-known in the scene bands Soilwork and The Haunted, which also handle thrash metal elements into their music, are from Gothenburg and have coined the term Gothenburg school.

Stylistic features

For this sub-genre, in addition to the usual stylistic properties of Death Metal, as the deep, rattling and aggressive vocals, the low tuned, highly distorted guitars or the lack optimistic choruses, especially two-voice guitar duels and occasionally also influences Swedish folklore with their unusual offbeat - oriented rhythms characteristic. Not uncommon but are also long passages with clean, undistorted guitars. The singing at the Melodic Death Metal varied between a low grunt ( growls ), roar, Screaming ( Screams ), and clear vocals. Thus, At the Gates, for example, have many black metal influences, therefore, includes the song from 1993, no longer merely the style of the growling, but also the so-called " high-pitched screams " high pitch. The adjective melodic but was formed by the fact that mainly serve the melodies of minor scales, the protagonists of this style in their two-part riffs, solos and also in the vocal lines. In contrast for example to Florida Death Metal, whose tunes often complex scales are based, Melodic Death Metal songs are classic and harmonious tonal. Even the controversial in the metal scene dominant use of keyboards found in many bands of this genre such as Children of Bodom and Dark Tranquillity well received and has, in part, caused rejection in the scene in addition to the major commercial successes that were able to achieve many of this genre.
