Life and work

Gardot started playing piano as a teenager and went even as a singer in night clubs in the Philadelphia area, where she studied fashion design at the community college. However, after a traffic accident in November 2003, in which she suffered head and spinal injuries and a broken pelvis more times, they could only play a limited extent. She was traveling by bike when she was hit by the driver of an SUV who disobeyed their right of way and then committed a hit and run. Gardot was long in the hospital, began to take an interest in jazz singing as part of a music therapy and learned to play guitar. Since the accident, she used a cane. You can only sit restricted; toured it uses a special chair or standing and singing uses an electronic control pain, a TENS. She developed a noise and light sensitivity, which is why she wears tinted glasses because of the accident. From the resulting hospitalized own songs, the EP Some Lessons arose and 2005 she appeared again. 2006 she released her first CD album Worrisome Heart, in which she Jef Lee Johnson ( guitar), Joel Bryant (keyboards ) and Matt Cappy (trumpet ) is accompanied, and on which the pieces Wicked Ride and Some Lessons find their EP. It was re-released by Verve in 2007. 2009, her album My One And Only Thrill at Universal, arranged by Vince Mendoza.

Gardot writes and composes many of her own songs and, along with jazz inspired by folk and pop, so it has also been compared in the criticism with Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell. In live concerts, it is clear that she is musically rooted in jazz; the albums, however, are pop - oriented.

They participated on the album Rio by Till Bronner (2008).

In early 2009 she received an Echo nomination and the album reached # 2 in the U.S. jazz charts for Worrisome Heart.

In 2010 she was awarded internationally in the category singer of the year with the Echo Jazz. The award was handed over to her on September 24, 2010 in Berlin after their concert at the Admiral Palace, as it at the official award ceremony in May had not been able to attend.
