Melvin Laird

Melvin Robert ( Bom ) Laird ( born September 1, 1922 in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American writer and former politician ( Republican).

He graduated in 1942 with a B. A. his studies at Carleton College in Minnesota now and then served in the U.S. Navy. 1946 to 1952 he was his father's successor in the Senate from Wisconsin and from 1952 deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives. President Richard Nixon appointed him in 1969 as the tenth Secretary of Defense in his cabinet.

He urged Nixon to continue the Vietnamization of the Vietnam War. To strengthen the South Vietnamese army, he started in 1972, the Project Enhance Plus, which showed short-term successes. Laird resigned during the Watergate scandal. On January 30, 1973 Elliot L. Richardson followed after him as defense minister. Laird then worked as a consultant for international relations, among others for Reader's Digest.
