As a Member State (outside of international treaties and Member State) one state is referred to in international law, the member of an international or supranational organization or part of an alliance or a regulated community ( Federation ) is. It is a single state in an international connection of several countries.

For example, Germany is a party to the European Union and thus their Member State. In addition, Germany is also a member of other organizations and alliances such as NATO, the OECD, the OSCE, the WTO and the United Nations ( UN).

In contrast, Germany is only a part, but not a Member State, such as the Western community of values ​​, as this is not a formal organization.

The individual Member States definitely keep their international legal personality, because their relationships are still governed by international law.
