Memphis in May

Memphis in May is a festival which is celebrated since 1976 in Memphis, Tennessee over the period of four weeks. It consists of four independent parts in detail.

It starts with the Beale Street Music Festival, in which well-known artists from the rock and pop field, but also blues and soul greats on a weekend at the Beale Street deny a festival. Here are up to 100,000 visitors per day. In the subsequent International Week each year a different country is placed at the center and informed both in schools and at public events about this.

Nationally -known part of Memphis in May is The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. More than 250 teams that have successfully passed several qualifying rounds will face off at the largest pork barbeque contest in the world. To see the 90,000 spectators the teams in the disciplines of pork ribs, pork shoulder and whole hog. In addition there are special prizes for the most original stand, the best side dish, etc.

The end of the festival finally forms the Sunset Symphony at the Memphis Symphonic Orchestra on the banks of the Mississippi River for free or for a small payment occurs together with famous musicians of the city.
