Memphis Street Railway Co

The Memphis Street Railway Company operating from 1895 to 1947 disused tram in Memphis. From 1931 to 1960 she entertained beyond a catenary bus network.

History

The Memphis Street Railway Company was established on 28 March 1895 merger of the Citizens Street Railroad, the City & Suburban Railway, the East End Street Railway, the Memphis & Raleigh Springs Railroad and other businesses. About the Company was a subsidiary of the Memphis & Lakeview Railway, the successor to the Memphis Interurban Company. This operation closed with four vehicles, the 10.83 miles long overland line to Lakeview in the neighboring state of Mississippi.

In 1958 went out to society. Was succeeded by the Memphis Transit Company, which merged in turn 1961 in Memphis Area Transit Authority of located on public property ( MATA ).

Tram

Routes and lines

In 1911, the network consisted with its greatest extent from 51 miles and 26.5 miles double track single-track lines. Up to 14 lines were run, the longest inverted from the downtown ( city center ) to the military cemetery Memphis National Cemetery near the suburb of Raleigh. From the 1930s the lines were gradually abandoned in favor of the bus and coach transport.

The power supply was provided by a catenary by means of rod current collectors.

Rolling stock

The Company had in 1911 132 closed and 109 open vehicles and 69 semi - convertibles (closed or open usable trams ). The vehicles were usually go individually, Beiwagenverkehr existed at the train to Lakeview.

Trolleybus

The trolleybuses solved from 1931 successively from the trams. In 1960, the last trolley bus was discontinued in favor of diesel buses.
