1846, the school was moved back to Reykjavík, in that time the largest building of Iceland, which is depicted on the 500 -krone banknote. Next to the old main building will be about 10 more buildings as a library, used for lessons and accommodation of students.

The name of the school were over time Skálholtsskóli first, later Lærðiskólinn, Latínuskólinn ( grammar school ) or Latin Scholae Reykjavicensis. The current name Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík has existed since 1937.
