Mentuhotep (treasurer)

Mentuhotep was an Egyptian treasurer, who served under Sesostris I ( after his 22nd year of reign ).

General

Montuhotep is known from a large number of monuments. In el- Lisht he had a great Mastabagrab and at Abydos a chapel was a large stele. He also carries the title of vizier, but where it is disputed whether he was acting vizier, or this item was in honor only. There are few fixed objects dated with his name, but had the 22nd year of the reign of Sesostris I. a certain Sobekhotep the Office of the Treasurer held so Mentuhotep is likely to be set afterwards. The location of his grave indicates that he is not held office before, as grave sites in nearby pyramid can be expected only after completion of the pyramid.

There were several statues of him in the Temple of Amun at Karnak. From the inscriptions on their statues in Karnak may be concluded that he was the main architect of the Amuntempels, which should be the core of the great temple of the New Kingdom. Mentuhotep seems to have also reestablished the Osiris temple at Abydos.

It has been suggested that he was the author of several literary texts, especially the so-called Loyalist doctrine.

The Mastaba

The grave of Mentuhotep in el- Lisht is not well preserved, but was once one of the largest private investments in the local cemetery. The building stood just east of the pyramid of Sesostris I, south of Aufweges. The mastaba was 14.14 × 29 m tall and probably had a decorated courtyard with columns. The walls were adorned me relief. There were fragments of ten life-size statues. The entire building was demolished to the foundation walls of stone-robbers, so little can be said about the plan. The mastaba was surrounded by a mudbrick wall. She was from 2.1 to 2.89 m thick and had the dimensions of approximately 32 × 45 m ( at the outer edges). Within the wall, south of the Mastaba there were eight rooms, probably for the priests and the cult of the dead. In the north, a shaft leading to the underground rooms. In the grave chamber found two sarcophagi, one of which is broken and never used, the other of granite and well received. He is outside decorated with a palace facade and inside with Coffin Texts, equipment Friesen and a list of victims.
