Ruins of Merburg
The Merburg is a ruined hill fort in Kirrberg, a district of Homburg, in the eastern edge of the Saar Pfalz -Kreis Saarland. The castle from the 11th century can be described as one of the smallest and oldest castles in the Saarland.
Location
The remains of the former tower castle located on the just 12 meters from the valley of the Lambsbaches outstanding 245 m above sea level. NN high Mala rocks.
Plant
The Merburg had an octagonal keep, whose wall thickness suggests that he was at least ten feet tall. Together with a fixed house, he was surrounded by a 75 meter long curtain wall.
History
According to tradition, the Merburg to have been built in the Salian period 1024-1080 on the Mala rocks in Kirrberg. 1172 Knights are called by the Merburg as Ministeriale first time.
The castle was excavated 1975-1980 and thus handed over to the historic inventory.
