Mercedes-Benz C 215

CL 500 (2002-2006)

The Mercedes -Benz C 215 is a luxury coupe that was sold under the name Mercedes -Benz CL-Class. The C 215 is based on the platform of the S-Class saloons ( 220), but has an independent body design. It also has the same motors are installed, but only the large-displacement gasoline engines.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999, the Mercedes -Benz C 215 series was first with the CL 500 its world premiere. Sales in Europe and Japan started in September 1999. Early 2000 came the CL 600 with twelve-cylinder engine added.

By March 2006 46.800 coupés of the C 215 series were sold.

General

As standard the Mercedes Coupe C 215 came on a steel suspension based active suspension system Active Body Control (ABC ) was used. The C 215 was thus the first passenger car from German production, which was equipped with an active suspension. This technology is out of the CL only in the Mercedes S- and SL-Class available. All other running gear ( the so-called active chassis of Citroën and BMW Dynamic Drive ) are only adaptive landing gears. On the basis of sensor signals and using special hydraulic cylinders on the axles compensated ABC rolling and pitching movements of the body when moving off, cornering and braking almost completely. Technically complete compensation would be possible, but is not applied with respect to the driver's habits.

Standard features of the coupe were also, for example:

  • Brake Assist
  • Bi -xenon headlights with cleaning system
  • Parktronic ( parking aid )
  • Multi -function steering wheel
  • Five -speed automatic transmission with tip - circuit
  • Cruise control with variable speed control Speedtronic
  • Automatic climate control with active carbon filter
  • Electrically adjustable leather seats with memory

Optionally available were:

  • An electronic tire pressure monitoring system
  • Dynamic navigation system dynAPS
  • Keyless Go ( keyless access and engine start )
  • Active seat ventilation
  • Multi-contour seats with massage function
  • Steering wheel heating
  • Heater
  • Rear cover additional security
  • TV
  • CD changer
  • Telephone fixed installation or mobile phone
  • Voice control system

For the first time in a car, the buyer of a CL of the C 215 series was able to order from spring 2001 natural stone trim for the interior. In a patented process, initially very thin granite sheets are produced ( 0.6 to 0.8 mm thick), which then specifically shaped to be applied to the center console, door panels, steering wheel rim and gear lever. The trim elements are available as part of the individualized designo program.

Facelift

In 2002 a facelift brought the coupe a modified front end with headlights in a modern clear glass look and a revised front bumper. The exterior mirror housings now contained a lighting environment that automatically turns on when you open the doors or when you press the central locking by remote control and the ground next to the vehicle lights. The back also has been revised.

The models CL 600 and CL 55 AMG were newly developed and far more powerful motors ( see Section motors). For all variants, the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension has been revised: in addition to the current total weight of the vehicle is determined and included in the calculation of the active suspension control system. Thus, the driving behavior is independent of the load.

As part of the facelift, the safety equipment was more sophisticated, including so-called up-front sensors in the front of the body, the early recognition of the severity of impact in a collision and thus trigger the passenger airbag in two stages. The belt tensioners are still activated earlier by the sensors. Also new is the automatic two-stage weight classification of the passenger using a special film in the seat cushion. To the right airbag is activated in two stages, not only by the severity of the accident, but also according to the rider weight.

Special models

1999 CL 55 AMG was built F1 Limited Edition in a small series of only 55 units as a special model based on the CL 55 AMG. The 5.4 -liter V8 engine with 265 kW (360 hp ) was unchanged. New was mainly the C -Brake -called carbon-ceramic brake system, which was first installed in a series production car from Mercedes -Benz. Another exclusive range of equipment were:

  • Exclusive paint finish in Brilliant Silver Metallic
  • Words " F1 Limited Edition" on the center console with consecutive serial number
  • Illuminated sill with lettering "F1 Limited Edition"
  • Front seats in shell character, black and silver leather and stitched AMG emblem
  • AMG sports steering wheel with perforated leather, carbon inlays and automatic transmission selector lever with leather and carbon

Motors

The top model CL 600 had to facelift the series in 2002, a 5.8 -liter twelve-cylinder engine in lightweight construction with three-valve technology, double ignition with AC ignition system and ion current diagnostics, automatic cylinder deactivation ( ZAS ), which reduces fuel consumption at part load, six catalysts and eight lambda sensors. In 2002, the CL 600 received a completely newly developed V12 engine with twin turbochargers and a charge pressure of one bar, but without ZAS. His performance thus increased by 36 percent and its torque by 51 percent over its predecessor model. The CL 500 was equipped with the 5.0 -liter V8 engine and could be optionally upgraded to 2002 with the automatic cylinder deactivation ( ZAS ). The power transfer was made to 2003 via the 5-speed automatic transmission from 09 /2003 by the 7- speed automatic transmission 7G -TRONIC, lower consumption and increased comfort was replaced for better acceleration.

The CL 55 AMG was offered until 2002, with the familiar from the SL 55 AMG 5.4 liter V8 with 265 kW (360 hp). Very rarely is built only for export (about 55 copies) Evo version with 308 kW ( 420 hp). As of November 2002, this engine was equipped with a compressor. It develops the same power as the same time offered twelve-cylinder CL 600, but has a much sportier characteristic. A five-speed automatic transmission with a switching device in the steering wheel for a sporty driving experience. Short term was offered 2002, the CL 63 AMG. He has an increased engine capacity of AMG twelve- cylinder that makes 326 kW ( 444 hp). After a short construction period, he was replaced by the uprated supercharged V8 in the CL 55 AMG. The power limit is 2003 again moved to the top - with the CL 65 AMG, which mobilized 450 kW ( 612 hp) and provides a torque of 1000 Nm between 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm.
