Mercedes-Benz M130 engine

The Mercedes -Benz M130 is a six -cylinder gasoline engine, which was produced from 1967 to 1980 by Mercedes -Benz.

The M130 engines are derived from the Mercedes -Benz M 129, however, the M130 had instead of the pairwise Zylinderananordnung of the previous model, a uniform cylinder distribution. By the elimination of the water jacket between the piston ( there was only in the upper part a slot for cooling was sufficient ), the bore could be increased for the same dimensions of the engine block to 86.5 mm. The stroke remained as in M129 78.8 mm. The mixture preparation was carried out either by mechanical Bosch injection or by Zenith carburettors and performed normally 160PS and 140 PS. The 280SL Pagoda and the 300 SEL 2.8, the power was increased by using a camshaft with longer valve opening times and adjusting the injection pump to 170 hp.

Due to stricter emission regulations in the U.S., there was also a low - injection compressed version, in which the ignition was withdrawn. Although both measures led to better exhaust values , but at the same time also a higher consumption.
