Mercedes-Benz M273 engine

The Mercedes -Benz M - 273 engine is a gasoline engine with eight cylinders in V configuration.

General

The M 273 is the evolution of M 113 From him he took over cylinder spacing and arrangement. He is technically related to the V6 petrol engine M 272, which originated in the same development cycle. The engines share especially the angle of the two cylinder banks each other and the distance between the individual cylinders.

The M 273 debuted in September 2005 in the S-Class. The engine has since been used in the E-Class and CLS, S- and R-Class, as well as in CL, SL and CLK, and the SUV ML, GL and G.

Basic technical data

Problems

Basically this engine is considered to be extremely reliable.

Similarly had early models (up to September 2006) problems with a deflection in the chain drive gear of the timing chain. Mercedes used until that date unsuitable hardened material. This meant that had to be replaced in affected vehicles, the entire chain drive regularly. According to Mercedes, the spur gear was installed from engine number 088 611 in a modified version.

In addition, the manifold was repeated striking. The flaps used in plastic, which will vary the length of the intake path can, coke with time and break in extreme cases.

Performance improvement

In addition to a pure electronic optimization, the result of which most providers has 316 kW specify (430 PS) and conducted in various test reports to a significant improvement in acceleration to 200 km / h ( approx. 3 s), are more complex conversions with other camshafts and valve springs available (approx. 460 hp).

Without admissibility within the scope of the Road Traffic Act and the headers are available. It should be noted however imperative that this may void the guarantee. Moreover, by A possibly deteriorated exhaust emissions, a tax offense could be met.
