History

The high payload variants of the MB 100 series - such as the MB 180 - were originally intended only for sales outside Germany and therefore play here, in contrast to the Country (Spain ), only a minor role. In Germany the MB 100 was offered from 1988 to 1995 to round out the commercial vehicle program down by Daimler -Benz. The vehicle was only with a single engine (OM 616), the 2.4 - liter diesel engine with 53 kW (72 PS), last 55 kW (75 PS), as it was used in the next largest 207 D, available. The production took place in Vitoria -Gasteiz, in the work of the former Industrias del Motor SA ( IMOSA ), one founded in the early 1950s subsidiary of the Auto Union ( DKW ). Competitors included the VW Transporter and Ford Transit, was succeeded by the Mercedes -Benz Vito.

The basic concept of the cab-over design with a front longitudinal engine and front-wheel drive and a non- self-supporting body on a tubular frame goes back to the early 1960s was the construction of IMOSA. This van with a two-stroke engine of DKW was offered until 1965 in Germany as DKW Quick Aster F 1000 L. Following the sale of Auto Union to Volkswagen AG plant in 1965, the two-stroke engine was replaced by a diesel engine from Daimler -Benz. This IMOSA F 1000 D but was not offered in Germany. In 1988 he came to revision than 100 MB even after Germany and other central and northern European countries. For a vehicle of the 1980s, he was in some details now out of date (eg, torsion bar suspension on the front axle, the regular manual lubrication with a grease gun required ), but had design requires a very large cargo space relative to vehicle size, surpassing in this respect its competitors.

The combination of front-engine, front-wheel drive and tubular frame of the MB 100 was well suited as a basis for special bodies. In particular, sale cars, often with significantly extended frame and rear double axle, but also tow or Möbelkoffer and even smaller buses were built by various vehicle manufacturers on the chassis of 100 MB.

For the model year 1992, the MB 100 has been revised. An external identifying feature was the now sloping lot cooler. The extended front should increase the passive safety of the vehicle, among other things.

After the production of the MB 100 had expired in Vitoria, he was with a new, asian bodywork in Korea continued to be built until 2004 Ssangyong and sold both under the brand name Ssangyong and under Mercedes -Benz. He was here in two wheelbases available, just as long as MB 100 and MB 140 Furthermore, it was available with 2.3-liter diesel engine and 2.2-liter petrol engine. With parts from Korea, he was also produced until 2004 in Vietnam in CKD method. He enjoyed throughout Asia and Central America, as well as in Australia popular. After the expiry of the production production went to China at the time of its second largest Ssangyong share owned Shanghai Automotive Industry, where the Korean MB 100/140-Fassung Istana is producing. However, no longer under the brand name Mercedes- Benz and Ssangyong, but as SHAC Istana.
