Mercedes-Benz SSK

Mercedes -Benz S, built in 1927, when DAMC 05 Oldtimer Festival Nürburgring

The Mercedes -Benz W 06 published in 1926 as a derivation of the model K from the same year. It is a very powerful sports car with a very large six-cylinder engine and compressor. As a result, more sophisticated vehicles of this type S with the names of type SS, SSK and SSKL published.

  • 3.1 Model 27/140/200 hp ( W 06 II, 1928-1929 )
  • 3.2 Model 27/160/200 hp ( W 06 II, 1929-1932 )
  • 3.3 Model 27/170/225 hp ( W 06 III, 1928-1930 )
  • 3.4 Model 27/180/250 hp ( WS 06, 1929-1930 )

Mercedes -Benz Type S (1926-1930)

The two - and four-seater open vehicles have been built on the long chassis with 3400 mm wheelbase. Of the other Mercedes -Benz models they were - like its sister model, K - three on the right side of the engine compartment exiting to distinguish leading exhaust hoses down.

The six-cylinder engine has a displacement of 6800 cc and a compression ratio of 1: 4.7. He develops an output of 120 hp (88 kW) at 3000 rpm. The overhead camshaft engine is driven by a vertical shaft. By activating the front -grown Roots blower performance in the short term to 180 hp ( 132 kW) can be increased. Therefore, the current model also name comes 26/120/180 hp.

Two updraft ring float carburetors supply the engine with gasoline. Each cylinder is equipped with two spark plugs ( dual ignition ), which are operated with both the vehicle battery and a magneto. The vehicles have a non-synchromesh four-speed gearbox with floor shift, which forwards the engine power to the rear wheels. You can reach a top speed of 170 km / h

The vehicles pressed steel frame of U - profiles and rigid axles front and rear, which are suspended on semi-elliptic leaf springs. All four wheels have drum brakes, which are operated by cables.

Mercedes- Benz SS (W 06, 1928-1934 )

In the same features came out two years later the successor type SS (Super Sport). This vehicle was first performed at the Daimler -Benz AG under the model number W06. Besides the pure chassis and the four-seater sports a convertible A and a Cabriolet C were available. There are various different engines:

Model 27/140/200 hp ( 1928 to 1930 )

The cars have an engine with 7065 cc displacement, the (147 kW) develops 140 hp (103 kW) and 200 hp with no compressor. The rated speed is 3300/min, the compression at 1: 5.2. With this engine, the car achieve a top speed of 185 km / h

Model 27/160/200 hp ( 1930 to 1932 )

The successor to the aforementioned model differs only by the higher power output of 160 hp ( 118 kW) without a compressor.

Model 27/170/225 hp ( 1928 to 1934 )

Parallel to the " weaker" models, there was also a version which with the same capacity and the same nominal speed without a compressor, a power of 170 hp ( 125 kW ) provided that when using the Roots blower to 225 hp ( 165 kW) increase. This higher power lay in the higher compression ratio of 1: 6.2 -founded. The top speed increased to 190 km / h

Mercedes -Benz SSK (1928-1932)

The most famous car of this type emerged on the short chassis with a 2950 mm wheelbase. " SSK " means " Super Sport Kurz". The race- propelled Carlo Felice Trossi prepared a sketch of how he would introduce an aerodynamically sensible car. An English coachbuilder built a vehicle of this drawing. The vehicles were delivered either as a chassis or as a sports two-seater. Also for this model, there were different engines, some of which correspond to those of the type SS:

Model 27/140/200 hp ( W 06 II, 1928-1929 )

This engine corresponds to the model with long wheelbase. The top speed is 180-185 km / h, depending on the rear axle.

Model 27/160/200 hp ( W 06 II, 1929-1932 )

A year earlier than in the SS model was changed to the engine with slightly higher performance in suction.

Model 27/170/225 hp ( W 06 III, 1928-1930 )

For two years, even the highly compressed and more powerful engine in the short chassis was available. He arranged for a top speed 188-192 km / h, depending on the rear axle.

Model 27/180/250 hp ( WS 06, 1929-1930 )

In addition to the engines of the type SS an even stronger model with 180 hp (132 kW) and 250 hp was in suction (184 kW) supercharged offered. The performance figures are at the level of the aforementioned embodiments.

Mercedes -Benz SSKL (WS 06 RS, 1929-1932 )

Derived from the SSK was a racing two-seater, which is probably caused by conversion of existing cars of type WS 06. The term " 27/240/300 hp " indicates the performance in suction (240 PS/176, 5 kW ) and the compressor operation ( 300 PS/221 kW). These benefits are at a rated speed of 3400 rpm and a compression ratio of 1: 7 achieved. The performance in suction mode is only theoretical, since in these cars, the Roots blower is constantly switched on.

In addition, the car is about 200 kg lighter than the SSK ( " SSKL " means " super sport short easy "). The top speed of this race car is 235 km / h

Racing use

From 1927 to 1933, the vehicles of the type W 06 were used in many domestic and foreign competitions. One of the best known driver was Rudolf Caracciola. So they founded the world famous Daimler- Benz AG as a manufacturer of fast racing and sports cars.

Production figures

Overall, only 300 vehicles were produced by the sample W 06. It later quite a few types S for Type SS and several types of SS SSK were factory rebuilt. The SSKL was, as mentioned above, probably only by subsequent conversion of SSK types. Referred to here are only the original versions:

  • Type S: about 150 pieces
  • Type SS: about 110 pieces
  • SSK: about 33 pieces.

From SSKL later only a few units were built; one was operated as a factory race car.

Successor

1934 these sports cars were replaced by the 500 K.
