Merci, Chérie

Merci, Chérie is the title of the winning song of the Euro Vision Song Contest 1966 in Luxembourg. It was composed by Udo Jürgens and Thomas Hörbiger and interpreted by Jürgens. Despite the French title of the text is written in German. The content is about a man who thanked his mistress at parting for good times and positive moments.

It was the third appearance of Udo Jürgens at the Euro Vision Song Contest in a row, having finished 1964 with " Why just why? " To sixth place in 1965 with " Tell her I let them greet " fourth place. In a field of 18 participating countries Jürgens started at number 9 and could eventually unite 31 jury points to itself.

To date, Merci, Chérie is the only victory of Austria to the Euro Vision Song Contest. The single reached # 4 on the German singles chart, # 2 on the Austrian singles chart and number 19 of the Dutch single charts. In June 1966, the song reached number 36 on the UK Singles Charts in arranged by Baker Cavendish and Johnny Anthey and interpreted by Vince Hill English version. A Swedish version of the Al Sundström wrote the text was recorded orchestra in the same year by Gunnar Wiklund and Nisse Hansen. Bent Fabric published an instrumental version on his album Operian Lovebirds. Other cover versions there are of Adoro, Belinda Carlisle, Bobby Darin, Karel Gott, Peter Alexander, Paul Mauriat, Tim Fischer, Ricky King and Harry Snell.
