Mercury Island

Mercury Iceland is a three -acre rocky island, located at the Southern Atlantic Coast of Namibia, one hundred kilometers north of Lüderitz and 960 meters north of the nearest mainland point on the south end of Spencer Bay. The island is part of the archipelago of the Penguin Islands and breeding ground for many seabirds and was for many years managed by a station for removal of guano. Today, there is here a weather station and the island is the starting point for research.

Mercury Iceland is just 1.5 kilometers from the African mainland and the island is also a north- islets ( North Islet ), a rock ledge about 30 meters north of the main island and connected by a wooden bridge. The island is hollow to essential parts and has six entrances to caves in their interior. The highest point of the island is 38 meters above sea level, the Jupiter Peak.

The islands are part of the Meob - Chamais marine sanctuary and home to the largest African Penguin colony of Namibia and the world's largest population of Küstenscharben (Phalacrocorax neglectus ).
