Mercury Phoenix Trust

The Mercury Phoenix Trust is a nonprofit organization based in Maidenhead ( UK ), which has made it its goal to fight the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome AIDS worldwide.

History

The organization was founded in 1992 by members of the rock band Queen, after which had died of AIDS diseased singer Freddie Mercury in November 1991 of pneumonia. In addition to Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon and the Queen manager Jim Beach was involved in the establishment, which was funded from the proceeds of the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.

The following year, the EP Five Live was released, can be heard on the interpreted by George Michael, Queen, and Lisa Stansfield songs. Up to the last ( contained only in the music editions ) song is, without exception, live recordings, which indeed implies also the title.

1994 was organized on the streets of Britain, the first country-wide fundraising campaign by fans, who has since been performed annually. Shortly after 1995, the last Queen album Made in Heaven was published, the Trust received on World AIDS Day, a donation of the total profits of Five Live, which was passed by Queen and their record companies.

On November 22, 1996, a traveling exhibition, called the Freddie Mercury Photographic Exhibition was launched, which consists of 94 photos which document the life of Freddie Mercury from his childhood up to the last photo from May 1991. After she began her journey at the Royal Albert Hall, they had traveled to Paris, Cologne, and even to Timisoara in Romania later. She was also seen in Nuneaton. Brian May commented as follows on the exhibition:

Since 2004, Queen offer in their official shop also bootlegs of concerts, which can be downloaded immediately after credit card payment. The proceeds will go to the Foundation.

Other projects

The Foundation supports more than 100 nonprofit organizations in Europe, Asia and America. These range from large organizations such as the World Health Organization to tiny establishments in Uganda, Kenya and India. Thus, for example, the British organization START, which deals with the study of skin disease itchy folliculitis, supported as well as the London Royal Marsten hospital, which conducts research at the Kaposi's sarcoma. Furthermore, the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa in Calcutta were supported with medical supplies.
