Meriden is a city in New Haven County in the U.S. state of Connecticut with 59,300 inhabitants ( 2004).
Meriden is conveniently located on the north -south and east - west trending Interstates 91 and 691 and between the cities of New Haven and Hartford, each about 30 km away. Meriden is also on the Quinnipiac River, which flows a few kilometers away in the great Connecticut River and offers access to the biggest waterway of the state.
History
1661 Jonathan Gilbert received approval and the land to build a farm near Cold Spring which later became the city of Meriden was. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the small community remained a loose collection of huts, which was only used by people passing through from time to time. Here, mainly the Solomon Goffe built and still living as a museum in 1771 Belcher Tavern ( Belcher tavern or inn ). 1724 about 35 families had made it strong that you need a special building for joint meetings and worship, as the path of the scattered farms was too far. This place is now on the corner of Ann Street / Dryden Drive. 1806 the parish was recognized Meriden. 1839 the railroad came and we moved the community towards Pilgrim Harbor, now the city center. By 1920, the airport was built. The first townhouse was built in 1860 and burned in 1904 from. Abraham Lincoln has held one of his speeches on the steps of the townhouse.
